    A few anthologies looking for science fiction, fantasy, horror and other genres of speculative fiction have put out open calls for submissions.
    Check out the following:

    After Lines: fantasy, science fiction, horror, speculative fiction. Closes when full.
    Pay: shared royalty. Stories up to 4000 words. Accepts reprints.
    Happily ever after is never the end, and the protagonist is usually not the only character in the story. After Lines seeks to explore the before, the after, and the un-spoken in fairytales, myths, and legends.

    Enter the Apocalypse: apocalyptic SF. Closes 15 June 2016.
    Pay: US$0.01 – US$0.08 per word. Stories up to 8000 words.
    Stories considered for Enter the Apocalypse must be stories about the start and / or middle of any type apocalypse. Apocalypse can include (but isn’t limited to) nuclear, epidemic, supernatural, bioweapon, cosmic, aliens, etc.

    Ghosts on Drugs: comedy fantasy, science fiction, horror, speculative fiction. Closes 1 October 2016.
    Pay: US$0.15/word for fiction under 2500 words; US$0.06/word for fiction over 2500 words, plus shared royalties. Stories up to 7500 words. Query for reprints.
    The only rule is that a tale include some version of at least one ghost who’s on some version of at least one drug. And both key terms are broadly defined—e.g., a ghostwriter hooked on cough syrup could fit, and a dead ancient god with an inhumanly intense craving to be worshipped again could too.

    Horrors of Hudson Valley: horror, fantasy, speculative fiction. Closes 1 June 2016.
    Pay: US$25 per story. Stories between 2000 – 8000 words. Query for reprints.
    This anthology is looking for original, supernatural horror stories set within the Hudson Valley Region within the State of New York (New York City is NOT considered a part of the Hudson Valley). Scary, creepy, eerie, funny. Be Gothic, modern, Lovecraftian, Victorian, Steampunk, whatever. Just set your story in the Hudson Valley.

    Penny Dread Tales: Heroes and Heroism in Clockwork and Steam: steampunk, SF, fantasy, horror. Closes 15 July 2016.
    Pay: US$5 – US$10 per story. Stories between 1000 – 10 000 words. Query for reprints.
    Discover times and places only dreamt of in your wildest imagination, with gadgets, gizmos and robots driven by aether and steam. The theme for this volume of steampunk short fiction is heroism and heroes.

    Sci Fi Collection Vol 1: science fiction. Closes 1 July 2016
    Pay: shared profits. 1000 – 30 000 words. Reprints okay.
    Onyx Neon Shorts is seeking Science Fiction short fiction for a collection to be released this year. Looking for stories as diverse as the authors who write them, and strongly encourage submissions from writers in underrepresented populations.

    The Binge-Watching Cure: any genre. Closes 31 December 2016.
    Pay: US$200 for stories under 5000 words; $500 for stories longer than 5000 words.
    The Binge-Watching Cure will be an anthology of short stories of increasing size. The first story will be 100 words—anyone can read that. The next, 200 words. Then 500, then longer, all the way to novella length.

    Transitions & Awakenings: science fiction, horror, fantasy, spec fic. Closes 30 June 2016.
    Pay: $0.10/word for first 1000 words, US$0.05/word for next 5000 words, US$0.03/word after that. Story must feature a cast who are predominantly people of colour.
    Theme: No regrets. Too many characters spend their time brooding about the past, whether it’s missed opportunities or mistakes that led to misfortune down the line. This anthology wants stories with at least one character who has no regrets – either for a specific moment, or in general.

    Automobilia: all genres, focus on cars and the automobile. Closes 31 August 2016.
    Pay: US$0.05/word and 3 contributor copies.
    The focus of Automobilia is to celebrate the inluence of the automobile on hearts and minds as seen through the eyes of fiction.

    Krampusnacht Two: Horror. Stories about Krampus, the central European dark companion to Santa. Closes 15 Aug 2016.
    Pay: US$10/story and contributor’s copy. 1000 – 10 000 words.
    Krampus is the “corrective” to Saint Nick’s indulgence and generosity. He carries a switch and chains, and sometimes throws very rotten children in a basket he carries on his back. This anthology is looking for short stories that explore different angles of the Krampus myth.

    Equus: Fantasy, science fiction, speculative fiction about horses. Opens 1 September; Closes 30 November 2016.
    Pay: US$10/story and contributor’s copy. under 7500 words.
    Looking for stories that explore the majesty of horses and their relationships with humans. Particularly interested in stories of horses, unicorns and pegasi, but interested in all magical horse-types.

    Ecopunk: Science fiction, speculative fiction. Closes 30 June 2016.
    Pay: AU$0.05/word up to $500; 2 contributor copies. 2000 – 10 000 words. No reprints.
    Ecopunk is looking for optimistic stories envisioning the future of our world as we are impacted by and adapt to climate change. New narratives of radical transformation and sustainability.

    Black Power: Any genre, stories about heroic black characters written by black/African writers. Closes 30 June 2016.
    Pay: US$25/story. 1500 – 10 000 words.
    Stories of black/African heroes and superheroes. Stories of superheroes in film and comic books capture essential truths about human nature. We relate to – and identify with – the characters and themes in these stories; we empathize with the dilemmas and problems that superheroes face, and we admire – and often mimic – their heroic acts.

    DOA: Extreme Horror Collection: Horror, spec fic. Closes 6 June 2016.
    Pay: US$0.05/word. 750 – 5000 words.
    This anthology is looking for stories of violence, sexual depravity, self-degradation, and other dark subjects taken to an extreme you’ve never read before. If consumed, please consult a mortician.

    Heart of Steel: Fantasy, romance, historical. Stories about LGBTQIA knights. Closes 30 September 2016.
    Pay: $200/story. 10 000 – 20 000 words.
    Knights are a well-established presence in the fiction landscape, from historical fiction to fantasy to romance. Less Than Three Press invites you to submit stories about knights and all they are willing to do and endure for the sake of those they love and protect.
