Welcome All,

I’m Mandi (the new intern at the AWM) and I’m very excited about being your Race Captain tonight. For those who didn’t meet me last week, I’m an avid reader of spec fic, chick lit, YA, and random non-fiction. I haven’t done much creative writing (except for uni assignments) but have continued on with creative writing assignment I did for uni.

Please feel free to introduce yourself and your current work-in-progress, as well as any goals you may have for your Race tonight.

Remember to check in half way through the race for refreshments – Quoteraides (inspirational quotes that’ll fire your fingers like Gatorade).

So, get your digits ready to dance across the keyboard. Ready, steady, go!

Hey Mandi!

I'm writing an assignment tonight... what fun. So I'm aiming to get at least something done--maybe some research, maybe some writing--whatever comes really.

Hi Perry,

Sounds good. Research is always easier than the writing part. You don't need to have your thoughts organised to research, you just read and take notes.

Good luck.

Hi Mandi and Perry, made it more or less in time.

I don't know what I'm working on yet, so I guess I had better figure it out! I'm hoping to get, say, 700 words done on whatever it turns out to be...

Half time. Time for some Quoteraides.

1. “You don’t find time to write. You make time.”
Nora Roberts

Congratulations to all of you – you’ve made time to write.

2. “Talent is cheaper than table salt. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot a hard work.”
Stephen King

Hard work is key, so keep those digits dancing.

Solid advice Mandi! I sometimes tell people the same thing as in the Nora Roberts quote, though now I will have to give her the credit.

I got a fair bit done which is great-- I've even taken down a few notes as an outline... not too bad for an hour's work. How about you two?

That's great Perry.

I haven't gotten much done. I did a written thing for uni - only a couple of paragraphs.

What about you David?

Well, not so good here. Only 365 words -- kind of a character outline (in letter form) for a new novel, so I have nailed down the beginning of a new MC, at least.

It's historical...so the research is (already) slowing me down!

Glad you got some good stuff done, Perry. What about you, Mandi?

Here's a little bit of the letter - though I doubt it will go into the story when it's done. It's a hard voice to get into after so many thousands of words about zombies and magic and stuff!

We had a visitor, yesterday, Georgine, who made the household feel altogether strange. A son of the Duke of Gloucester! He is newly arrived, and had passed the time with Jonathan at his club, or so they said. They were both unwell, somewhat, by the time they arrived. Jonathan had promised Lord Edward a glass of the good brandy which, as he sometimes declaims (and no doubt did on this occasion) is better than any other in Melbourne.

Lord Edward went on his way very late; he and Jonathan had much conversation on colonial politics, into which His Excellency tried to draw me a number of times. I found the entire evening enervating, Georgie. Afterwards I tried to say so to Jonathan, upon which remarks he reminded me that Lord Edward is a cousin of Her Majesty’s. “A distant cousin,” I said, though I must admit on little recollection of the evidence. “A cousin of the Queen,” he repeated, as if the fact itself absolved His Excellency of having to be understood by lesser people. Perhaps it does, Georgie; what do you think?

He paid me more attention than I thought flattering.

That's great David, 365 words is awesome for an hour - especially for historical fiction. And you made the time to write.

David, I was doing work for uni so I didn't get onto my own writing. But I liked the last line of your letter: 'He paid me more attention that I thought flattering' - it hints at an ulterior motive.

David and Perry, thanks for joining me on the Writer's Races tonight. Glad to hear everyone has made progress.

Hope to see you next week.
