I would love some help from published authors or professionals in the industry. I completed what I thought was the hard work - i.e. the manuscript - now it appears that this was the easy thing to achieve. Getting published is the tough one. I have tried a number of publishers and agents - all knock backs (I'm not naive - I know it could be because the story/writing is not as good as I thought it was), however I don't get any feedback from the professionals - just "Thanks but no thanks". Where can I get good professional feedback? and will this help if the agents/publishers have already said "No"? Can I incorporate any feedback and resubmit, or have I burnt my bridges with the agents and authors already? |

Hi Greg Did you target agents with a specialisation in your genre (and what is your genre, by the way?)? The difficult thing in principle is that houses, and increasingly more so agents, will not give unpublished authors the time of day. There are ways around this, though; I guess initially that your choice of agents and publishers would be the area to critique. |

Hi Tim, Thanks for the reply. Genre is commercial fiction (Mystery/Thriller). I did contact all the agents and publishers first to check that they if they were accepting this genre and were open to accept a manuscript. I tried to make sure I wasn't wasting anyones time, by checking all this out first. Another author told me that unless I can "prove" marketability, I probably won't get a good hearing. They recommended that I self-publish first and to show that they book is viable. Is this the only option available to me now? |

Hi Greg Pretty much, depending on how confident you are of publishing the title yourself. Self-publishing in print is both expensive and fraught with difficulty; you have to be copy-editor, typesetter, proofreader, designer and marketer all in one. An increasingly popular option, in order to further reduce the cost of input, is to e-publish. This isn't a sales push, but I operate a publishing services company which can co-ordinate all of the above, and publish your book professionally. If you want, just ask and I can give you a quote for publication of your book so you could at least weigh up whether you reckon this is a viable option for you? PM me if this is of interest to you - or if you have any other questions, just ask. |

Also on the self-promotion path here: I run an e-publishing company called Really Blue Books who are all about nurturing debut authors and producing a quality product. We publish both fiction and non-fiction. You should have a look at our website to see if what we do might be of interest to you: www.reallybluebooks.com It certainly isn't easy running the gauntlet of getting published. I wish you all the best in finding a suitable publisher. The effort will be worth the wait, I'm sure. Sarah |
