Paula, I particularly love the voice of the narrator. It's elegant without being overly-sentimental.

Paula, your piece is lovely. Very descriptive and atmospheric - I love those sorts of stories, especially when we are trusting the memories of a 102 year old lady - lots of room for fragments of stories etc...

thanks Dave, that's what I was trying for, I didn't feel as if it was quite working, but I guess it's only a first draft. I get too carried away editing sometimes and never write LOL

to steal ideas from one person is plagiarism, to steal from many is research . . .

I agree with Dave, Paula- your character has a dignified and elegant voice which fits well with her age and experiences.

thanks Perry and Dawn, it's great to have some encouragement, I was wondering if I had it all wrong, but now you guys have given me a bit of hope! LOL

I am trying for something not too depressing, though it has been a very hard life. As was life of the free settlers.

Well, James Joyce wrote one of the most depressing books known to mankind... *cough*

I'm reminded of a quote attributed to his wife:

"Why don't you write books people want to read, James?"

Seriously though, to pretend that it was all sweetness and light would be inauthentic. It is what it is. But there are lights in the darkness.

Good advice Dave. I officially love James Joyce's wife (she sounds like a wondefully practical person).

I'm doing a structural edit for uni so I'm not going mad with a red pen (I'm not that fast when it comes to copy editing) but I'm still pleased.
